     CHEERLEADER CHEERS

This page contains selected examples of school and community cheerleader
     cheers.

In the 1950s when I was growing up, high schools were the only public schools
that had cheerleaders. Now many elementary schools, and middle schools have
basketball and other sports affiliated cheerleader squads.  Some communities
also have cheerleading squads that perform at sports events such as little
league football games. Usually these pre-high school and community squads
are made up of only girls. However, many high school and most college
cheerleading squads are composed of females and males. Cheerleading is a
sport. You have to be physically strong to be a good cheerleader. And you have
to practice safely and perform safely.

There's a lot of  cross-fertilization that occurs between the cheers performed by
cheerleading squads and the informal foot stomping cheers that are performed
just for fun. Both cheerleading squads and foot stomping cheers use the other
"group's" cheers.  It's usually difficult to figure out whether the cheer originally
came from the formal cheerleading squad or from the group of girls who
     informally perform foot stomping cheers.

Thank you to all those who send in examples of cheers for possible posting on
    Cocojams!

Examples of rhymes & cheers are almost always posted the way that readers
send them to this website. Some of these examples have typos and other
accidental spelling errors or have text messaging, slang, or otherwise purposely
misspelled words & phrases. Many of these examples are written without any
capitalization at the beginning of a line or punctuation mark at the end of line.
This free flowing writing style appears to be the prevailing way that many youth
and young adults informally write on the Internet.  Posting examples written
this way may result in difficulty understanding the examples. However, I believe
that posting examples in their original form preserves the examples' flavor &
authenticity. I apologize to those persons who may have difficulty understanding
    these examples.

Thanks Lily, for including information about how you learned this cheer. For
those who may not know this, when Lily wrote "bring it on", she was referring to
a hit 2000 American made movie about high school cheerleaders.
See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204946/ for information & photos about the
movie Bring It On. Also see "Totally For Sure" cheers below on this page for
examples of another cheer that came from the 2006 sequel to that movie, Bring

      my friend {put a name in-}
      -jm ; 3/16/2007

      Editor:
Hello, jm. I've seen this cheer performed by children's cheerleading squads
in Pittsburgh, Penn. {from about 1997 to date}. The girls stand in a vertical line
and recite this cheer while they do foot stomps & handclaps. This cheer is
recited in a call & response format. The entire group starts with by saying
"1,2,3,4,5". The first person in line says "My name is [insert name or nickname]
and I say hi". The rest of group then says "6,8,9,10". The same group member
says "I'm gonna step aside and meet my friend" {to my knowledge, "back it up"
replaced "step aside" in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area around 2005 or so}.
When the first soloist says "step aside to meet my friend" she or he slides on
beat to form a parallel line to the right of the first line. The next soloist slides to
form a parallel line to the left of the first line. The third soloist slides to the front
of the right parallel line and the fourth soloist slides to the front of the left
parallel line. This pattern continues until all members of the group have had a
turn saying their name. At the end, the group says in unison something like:
      "1,2,3, 4, 5.  We are the {team name} and we say Hi! 6,7,8, 9,10. We're gonna
{step together {or back it up} 'cause that's the end". When they say "step
together" or "back it up" the two lines merge to form one line. "Back it up" is
performed by the first soloist facing forward but moving backwards to the beat
and forming a new line to the right of the first line. The same pattern as was
described for "Step Aside" is followed for "back it up" except that ahead of time
the group may have decided that each soloist must move to the back of either
the right or left line instead of to the front.

An example of this cheer is also posted on Cocojams' Foot Stomping Cheer's
      page.

logan, thanks for sending those cheers, and including an explanation of when &
how they are performed. As you can see, I decided to keep all of these cheers

using the first initial of their title or the first word of the cheer.

performance instructions that your squad used for that cheer. I'm curious, how

    -josh; 2/1/2007

    Editor:
Thanks, Josh for mentioning the grade you were in when you learned this
cheer. However, in order to track how long a cheer or rhyme has been around,
you need to note the year you were in the 7th grade. While it's not a real big
deal, having that kind of demographical information will be helpful for folk
collectors and researchers in the future.

alligator crocodile let's get crunk for a while ooh get crunk ooh get crunk lemon
lime tootie fruity come'on girls let's kick some booty.
    -lala; 2/9/2007

    Editor:
"Crunk" is a newly coined slang word that may have been formed by combining
the words "crazy" & "funk". Crunk has a number of meanings. Among those
meanings is "to have a really good time" and "to use a lot of energy or to be on
high level, as in high volume for music. In the context of this rhyme, I believe that
"let's get crunk" is like saying "let's get hyped"; "let's get excited" and "let's get
energized". To provide some substantiation to the connection of "crunk"
with "funk", notice the line "let's get funky" and how the word "funky" is repeated
in version #1 of this rhyme.

Kenya and her girlfriend Yammesha visited me today and showed me some
cheers. "Kingsley" is the name of a community center which has children & youth
athletic teams and cheerleaders. "Are you ready to go down" means "Are you
ready to lose?" The word "clap" isn't said. It is done. See "Monkey" and

As We Walk To The Valley Of Hershey

As we walk to the valley of Hershey
with the smell of chocolate in the air
The only thing sweeter than candy
is me and my girls here.
All the people around us are haters.
Except for the fans of the Panthers.
The only thing I wanna tell you.
Is don't hate on the Panthers
cause you know you wanna a kiss
  -Ebonaye {10 years old; Pittsburgh, PA}; 5/9/2008

   Editor:
Thanks, Ebonaye for showing me how you do this cheer. Ebonaye did a stomp
stomp clap, stomp stomp clap foot stomping routine while she recited this cheer.
At the end of the last line, on the word "kiss", she stuck out her butt to the side
and patted it, emphasizing what people should do if they dared to "hate on" her
team. I have heard the first line of this cheer given as "Welcome to the Valley of
Hershey". {Presumably, "Hershey" is the city in Pennsylvania known for its
production of chocolate candies}. I have also heard the team mentioned in the
"except for the fans of the" line given as "the Gators", a community football team.
"The Panthers" is the name of the athletic team in the school that Ebonaye
attends. Given that the words"haters" and "Gators" rhyme, I believe that students
at Ebonaye's school probably "took" this cheer from the Gators' cheerleading
squad.  It's anybody's guess where and when that squad learned this cheer, but I
only heard it from girls at that school two years ago.

  Editor:

katrina, thanks for sending in a different version of Bang Bang Choo Choo
Train. You wrote that your friends "used to do this". I'm wondering which year
{such as 2004} or what decade {such as the 1990s} that was. I'm also wondering
what age your friends were, whether your friends were cheerleaders, or just they
do this cheer just for fun. I'm also wondering if they stopped doing it because
they were no longer in the cheerleading squad, or because they got older or
    some other reason.

Also, I'm curious about the meaning of the word "sick" that you wrote after
"peanut butter reeses cup". I'm wondering did you mean "sike" {a slang word that
rhymes with "like" and means "I don't really mean what I just said". Or did you
mean to write "stick"? I'm guessing that you didn't really mean to write "sick"
because it doesn't seem to fit the rest of the line. Your response would be
    appreciated. Thanks again!

In spite of its slightly different name, this version is clearly part of the "Bang

I'm the new cheer coach for the Holy Savior cheerleading team out in Wichita
Kansas I just needed to shout out my girls and let all know that we can do our
thang out here too always have and always will. It feels good to be able to cheer
at the only African American Catholic Pre-K 3 through 8th grade school from the
4th grade to the 8th and now be the coach as a tenth grade. When you use our
cheers use them with attitude. Hope you enjoy our cheers and chants don't forget
to replace your school, cheer team, or mascot name with the Angels and Holy
Savior. Here are some of our favorites.

   Editor:
Thanks for sending in those cheers, Princess R. I really like your comment
"When  you use our cheers, use them with attitude". It's important for people to

I've posted the other examples that Princess shared under the specific
alphabetical listing for the first letter of that rhyme.

"Bang Bang Choo ChooTrain" is also found in other cheers and handclap

   -Toya L. & Montel; 1999

   Editor:
Thanks to my daughter-in-law Toya and my grandson Montel for sharing this
rhyme with me. I'm putting this on this page with cheerleader cheers mainly
because of christi's example that I received on 4/22/2008. However, Toya said
that she and her girlfriends crossed arms and walked down the sidewalk singing
this song that dared anyone to break in between them. I don't know what would
happened if someone did break in between the girls' crossed arms. What was
was interesting to me that after the first couple of words of this song, Toya's
seven year old song Montel joined in. Toya was surprised that Montel knew
"Beware". Montel confirmed that not only is that rhyme still sung the same way,
but kids still walked holding arms down the sidewalk when they sung it.  I'm not
sure if "Beware" started out as a cheerleader cheer or not. But it's interesting
that the "we're coming through" line is also in christi's version of "Beware" that is
posted above. Btw, I think that "over roll" may have originally been "over rule",
but that's just a guess on my part.

Hello, Pari! I would be interested in knowing what you meant by "Big D" in that
chant. Is that the initial of your school? Or is that the nickname of an athlete on
the team? And is "Jh" the initials of another player? I figure that the team's name
is the bulldog. {Okay, that was an easy guess}. But can you help me out by
    explaining the rest? Thanks.

   Editor:
Thanks, Amanda, for sending in that example. I have heard this recited as a
rhyme in Pittsburgh, PA {among African American girls & boys ages 6-12
years old}. Those children didn't use "valley" or "cowboy" voices for that rhyme.
But I do remember them doing an "underwater" voice. It's interesting that this
rhyme/cheer is found in both Pennsylvania and Oklahoma-and I'm sure in many
other parts of the USA. And I wouldn't be surprised if it is also recited in other
    English speaking  countries.

This rhyme is found in the "Firecracker, Firecracker" rhymes presented

themselves. Which way do you remember reciting this cheer?

If I had to guess which rhyme is currently the most popular, I'd guess this one.
See other versions "Brick Wall Water Fall" on this page and many more
examples on Cocojams' School Yard Taunts page.

Also, notice how lines from "Brick Wall Water Fall" are found in "Bang
Bang Choo Choo Train" rhymes that are posted upthread {above}.

Btw, on 6/16/2007, my niece Yammesha and her friend Kenya showed me
how cheerleaders in their community groups in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania do
"Brickwall Waterfall". The tempo is faster than what I had expected. The girls
did leg lifts and other motions that corresponded with the words that they
chanted. For instance, when they said "waterfall" they moved their fingers to
imitate water trickling down. And when they said "you think you got it all/you
don't I do", they moved their hands down their body in a sensuous motion. The
cheer ended with a half turn and the girls' dramatically hitching their butt to the
right {an action meant to be insulting to whomever the cheer was directed.

Thanks, Alyssa for sending in that version of this cheer that you and your team

It just occurred to me that "owe owe owe" or ooh-we ooh-we oh" [and
similarly written phrases] comes from the R&B song "Jungle Love" by Morris
Day & The Times. This phrase, given as "Oh-wee-oh-wee-oh," repeats in the
background of that 1984 song. Morris Day & The Times sung "Jungle Love"
and other songs when Day was featured as Prince's antagonist in Prince's
     movie Purple Rain.

I'm wondering how this cheer came to be known in England. I guess the world is

     -Jordan; 7/4/2006

    Editor:
Jordan, I'm assuming that "bulldogs" is the name of your school's athletic team.
"Bulldogs" is also a referent for one Black Greek letter fraternity {Omega Psi
Phi, Inc.} The chant "Brr, it's cold in here" is a signature chant that is associated
with another Black Greek letter fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. That fraternity
chant is "Brr it's cold in here/there must be some Alphas in the atmosphere
[repeat 1x}...Ice ice baby/too cold too cold/ ice ice baby/the black and gold.
    -snip-

Black and gold are the Alpha's colors.  My guess is that the cheerleader chant
came from the fraternity chant and not vice versa.

    Sorority Chants page.

    Editor:
Thank you very much Cheer Girl for including all of that demographical
information. That will be very helpful for researchers and collectors of children's
rhymes now and in the future.

Btw: "The butterfly" is the name of a popular 1980s R&B dance. Both male and
female dancers shake their hips from side to side in a winding motion and also
rhythmically dip or bend close to the ground.

jumping jacks) put em in a high chair (kneel down on one knee) feed em with a
spoon (pretend to feed with a spoon) com'on girls (stand up with hands on hips)
lets kick em to the moon (kick your leg up high OR do a split or something)

    -Kate {Florida}; 4/16/2007

    Editor:
Kate, thanks for sending in that version of California Oranges along with the
performance directions and demographical information of where you live. That
demographical information is helpful to those people like me who are interested
in finding out which cheers and rhymes are known in different parts of the USA
and the rest of the English speaking world.

    California Oranges {Version #2}

My friend taught me this (i put the moves too):
California oranges (put your hands above your head like a circle) Texas Cactus
(put your hands on your booty one at a time when u say each word) We think
(point to yourselves) Your team (point away from you) Needs a lil practice (do
like 3 jumping jacks while saying it). Throw em in a highchair (get down like u
are proposing) Feed em with a spoon (act like u are feeding a baby) Come on
girls (stand up) Lets kick em to the moon! (do a high kick)
    Hope it makes sense.
    -Maria {Missouri}; 7/6/2006

    Editor:
Thanks, Maria for sending in that cheer and remembering to include
performance instructions and demographical information {the state you live in}.
Btw, your instructions do make sense.

     -Yasmin H., visual artist {New York City, New York}, 2/25/04 {memories of
     East  Brooklyn, New York, in the late 1980s.}

     Editor:
Yasmin H. sent in version of "California Oranges" and other examples of
cheers  which I have posted on this page in alphabetical order. In her
email, Yasmin described the cheers she remembered doing and commented
about her experiences growing up in the late 1980s in a Black/Latino
     neighborhood of New York City.

Here's an excerpt of Yasmin's comments about the "California Oranges" cheer:

"Although the 302 cheerleading coach was a white English teacher, she'd
teach us some of her cheers and would learn the rest from the members of the
squad. So it wasn't unusual to have us perform {California Oranges & Standup
Get Ready} back to back at a show or game"

See Yasmin's comment about "Standup Get Ready" below.  Thanks, Yasmin!!

We've got sprit, We've got sass, Not to mention a killer...BACK(do some kind of

win it every day, Expect nothing less, We are the best, MUSTANGES(replace
      with your mascot).

      Editor:
Amanda, thank you for including information about how you and your friends
did the cheer that you made up. The lines "___ is my name/and cheering is my
game" is one that I've come across before, but not with the other lines. Keep
      using your creativity!

      Editor:
Thanks, erica, for sending in that cheer. My guess is that "put some booty in it "
means that the cheerleaders would dosome butt shaking dance steps.

    Editor:
I wrote this cheer down as I heard it. The two hypens represent "two spaces"
{or two claps} before the last line. {I case I'm showing my age by writing this
cheer that way. As you can see by the examples that are sent in, it seems that
most children/youth write examples in essay form rather than poetry form.

Btw, Keona, Sheree, and Alayah chanted this while doing a foot
    stomping/handclap routine.

See Cocojams' Foot Stomping page for more information about foot stomping
   cheers.

Also, see "Peaches and Cream" on this page for an almost identical cheer.
