REFERENCES TO MICHAEL JACKSON IN PLAYGROUND RHYMES, PART II
This is Part II of a two part post which present selected examples of English language playground rhymes that mention recording artist and entertainer Michael Jackson. These examples are from the playground rhyme family "Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky".
WARNING: Some content in this page may be considered inappropriate for children & youth.
Part I of this post contains selected examples of rhymes that mention Michael Jackson but do not include any lines such as "Michael Jackson is a fag" or "he used to play with little toys/now he plays with little boys". Part II of this post presents selected examples that include those lines. Click http://cocojams.com/content/references-michael-jackson-playground-rhymes... for Part I of this post.
The examples and comments in this post are presented for the folkloric record and for sociological reasons.
EDITORIAL COMMENT ABOUT THESE RHYMES
The Michael Jackson versions of "Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky" document two historical events: the soda marketing wars of the 1980s and the January 1984 accident where fireworks set that King of Pop's hair on fire while he singing a version of his hit song "Billy Jean" during the filming of a Pepsi Cola television commercial.
I believe that these "Michael Jackson/Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky" rhymes and other [but by no means all] "Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky" rhymes are part of or very similar to the African American insult exchange rhymes known as "the dozens". Apart from the reference to Michael Jackson, in these playground rhymes an anonymous person is "dissed" (taunted) with insults such as "your mama stinks and so do you".
The purpose of "the dozens" is to build up self esteem and street cred (credibility) by not giving in to anger in the face of taunts and quickly giving taunts back better than you receive. Given that many persons reciting these "Michael Jackson/Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky" insult rhymes known little if anything about "the dozens", it may be that these rhymes have become seperated from their cultural context.
Perhaps the main reason for reciting these rhymes is that these rhymes allow people to be naughty without any real consequences. In this sense, the reason for reciting these rhymes is the same as the reason for reciting the widely known handclapping rhyme "Miss Susie Had A Steamboat
It's important to recognize that only a small number of "Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky" rhymes include any mention of Michael Jackson. In my research of almost 400 examples of "Down By The Banks Of The Hanky Panky" to date (most of which were found online), only about a third of those rhymes mention the now deceased King of Pop music Michael Jackson. And only a small number of those rhymes include the rhyme "Michael Jackson is a fag" and/or the line "he used to play with little toys/now he plays with little boys".
I don't think that everyone who recites (or recited) these rhymes or believed or believes that Michael Jackson was homosexual and/or believed (or still believes) that he played with little boys. As some of the bloggers who shared their examples indicated in their comments, they didn't know what "fag" meant. Many children who recited these examples may have been chanting from rote memory without given much thought to the words of the rhyme..
That said, I'm concerned that rhymes that include the pejorative word "fag" may lead to children, teens, and adults to believe that it's okay to call someone a "fag" if they think he or she is homosexual and/or even if the person has indicated that he or she is homosexual. Furthermore, I believe that it's wrong to conflate homosexuality with pedophilia as a few of these rhymes do. Homosexuality and pedophilia are not the same thing.
I strongly disapprove of calling anyone a "fag". Doing so can be hurtful and in my opinion, is socially unacceptable.

DOWN BY THE RIVER OF THE HANKY PANKY (Example #5)
I'm a former 8th grader. For our last day of school we were free to just talk and do whatever in our History class. So we played "Down by the river." I thank Sierra (an earlier poster) for reminding me of most of the words. This is the full (or at least I hope) version and helpful tips on playing:
Down, Down, Down, Down, (during these 4 down's, the person starting must not start until all 4 downs have been said. So basically your just bouncing your hand up in down in the person's palm that sits next to you until you start.) Down by the river of the hanky-panky, there's a bullfrog jumping from bank to bank singing east side, west coast, east side daily dang dong!
Why you hit my hand so hard, tell me what I did so wrong! Es As Ais Ows (pronounced likely as E's Ah's A's O's), east side daily dang dong.
I pledge allegiance to the flag. Michael Jackson is a fag (later we switched it to "I shop with a bag" for the purposes of not having the teacher over hear us. Lol).
(Sorry but I'm not entirely sure what goes before this next part, but I think this is correct. :/) Now we drinking Coca Cola, Coca Cola's burning up. Now we drinking 7up. 7up is out of style, now we going Buck Wild. Buck Wild's out of style now we going Es As Ais Ows, east side daily dang DONG!
On that last dong, if you manage to hit the hand of the person you're supposed to, they're out, if they pull away before you can, you're out. Have fun! :)

DOWN BY THE BANKS OF THE HANKY PANKY (Example #11)
We used to do this all the time at school and at camp, sometimes we freshmen still do it before gym class starts when we're all sitting around. You sit in a circle with your left hand on top of someone else's right and your right hand under someone else's left, and you go in a circle smacking each other's hands as you sing the song:
Down by the banks of the hanky panky
where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky
Singing eep, op, eep-op-op
bubblegum and soda pop
I pledge allegiance to the flag
Michael Jackson is a fag
Coca-cola brought him up
Now we're drinking 7-up
7-up has no caffeine
Now we're wearing Levi jeans
Levi jeans are out of style
Now we're talking for a while
skiddle diddle piddle bop
bubblegum and soda POP!
and whoever's hand is hit on the last 'pop' is out. Then you repeat the song getting faster and faster until somebody finally wins.
Sadly we really did and still do sing the line about Michael Jackson being a fag. In elementary and middle school we also had a similar rhyme ("I pledge allegiance to the flag and Michael Jackson is a fag. He used to play with little toys but now he plays with little boys.") and I can remember saying it at a very young age, before I had any idea what a 'fag' was. It was meant to be innocent and not offensive to anybody. Also, since Michael Jackson's death (may he R.I.P.) many people have substituted Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus for Michael Jackson or changed that line to "Michael Jackson makes me gag". My particular group of friends has done both ("Lady Gaga makes me gag") and I think it's kind of a nice modern version of the song.

How come nobody remembers the yanky doodle rhyme at the end? I was born in '84 and grew up in the early nineties and in Atlanta we did it like this:
Down by the river of the hanky panky
where the bullforogs jump from bank to bank
singing eep, ipe, oop, opps
Chillie willy ding dong
Play a game of ping pong
I pledge alligence to the flag

now we're singin' "Billie Jean"
"Billie Jean" is out of style
Now we're singing Bobbie Brown
Bobbie Brown is not a song... I forgot what came next as everything goes hazy from here
but then it went into this:
Michael Jackson went to town, riding on a pony
stuck a feather in his hat and called it macoroni
Girl Scout, Girl Scout,
Do your duty,
Don't forget to wash your booty (or tooti if we were naughty... tooti was our slang for vagina)
Boy Scout Boy Scout
