This Cocojams page provides links to a small sampling of online video clips of gospel & spiritual music from African American & non-African American cultures. These links were originally found on YouTube and other Internet websites that feature free music video clips.  I am using liberal definitions of what constitutes "gospel" and "spirituals".

The purpose of this page is to encourage the preservation, collection, dissemination, analysis & study, performance, use, and aesthetic & spiritual appreciation of these important indices of folk culture.  To borrow a phrase from a popular contemporary gospel song, seeing, hearing, and studying these videos can provide information about "why we sing", what we sing, the way we sing what we sing, and the way we & others respond to the music.  For instance, in addition to an aesthetic & religious appreciation of Black gospel music, I'm interested in the continuity & changes in the structure, content {lyrics}, and the performance style of that music.  I like to "study" example of contemporary Black gospel music to see if {and how} the artists use call & response patterns, floating verses from spirituals and older gospel songs, and such musical techniques as "lining" {when the soloist says/sings a sentence and the choir then sings that same phrase or a similar phrase}. I am also interested in Black gospel as a performance art/activity. While I'm listening to the music, I'm also noticing the participatory nature of the performance {whether/how the vocalist/choir engages the congregation/audience; whether the audience/congregation spontaneously responds to the music they hear and if so, how they respond.

Other people who submit examples of videos to this page or who will watch these videos may interested in the quality or tone of a vocalist or choir. Or folks may be interested in the way a vocalist of group interprets a song or the way different vocalists sing the same song. It's all good.

It is important to note that this Cocojams page will not include any ratings or judgment about the merits of featured videos. Furthermore, this page will not include any commentary or questions about gospel or spiritual music or about the featured videos. Also, unlike other Cocojams pages, while I greatly appreciate the submission of music links for possible posting on this page, I will not be including the names of persons who submitted those links to Cocojams.

My thanks and heartfelt appreciation to websites such as YouTube for making these videos available for public sharing.

I'm sorry. No lyrics to spirituals or to gospel songs will be posted on this thread. There are a number of websites that provide lyrics of religious songs. In order to find lyrics to a specific song, use a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Entire the title of the song in the box that is provided, press submit, and then click on one of the web pages that will be shown. Or you can add the key words Negro spirituals or gospel music in the box that is provided for a general listing of lyrics to songs. Among the websites that provide the lyrics to religous songs are
